A police case has been registered against Ram Gopal Varma for his objectionable tweets on Lord Ganesh. On a complaint by lawyer Karuna Sagar, a case was filed against Ram Gopal Varma at the Saroornagar police station in Cyberabad.
The complainant alleged that Ram Gopal Varma hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by insulting Lord Ganesh through his series of tweets.
“We have registered a case against Ram Gopal Varma. We will seek legal opinion before proceeding further in the case,” stated Saroornagar Police Inspector B. Naveen Reddy.
Ram Gopal Varma has been booked under four sections of the Indian Penal Code; sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and 298 (hurting religious feelings).
Several police complaints were also filed against Ram Gopal Varma in Mumbai for his objectionable remarks on Lord Ganesh, though he apologised for thesen later.
“It’s the way I am. If you remember, there was a huge furore over an abusive word I used against Amitabh Bachchan. Everybody got into a frenzy except him, whereas in reality, he should have been the only one to get upset. He didn’t get upset only because he knew and understood the context.” said the filmmaker.
On August 28, 2014, a day before the eleven day Ganeshotsav began in Mumbai, Hyderabad and other places, the filmmaker posted a series of tweets about Lord Ganesh.
The next day, he gave a clarification, saying they were made in a usual manner. “All tweets I put on Ganesha were in my usual manner but unintended by me to hurt anyone’s sentiments, but if they did I sincerely apologise,” he tweeted Saturday (August 30, 2014).
The Andheri Magistrate has posted the complaint for hearing on September 30, 2014 when he would hear the parties on the point of issuing process against Ram Gopal Varma.
