In front of hundreds of the most powerful men and women in the world, Emma Watson presented her HeforShe campaign and stated, “My recent research has shown me that feminism has become and unpopular word. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one.”
Gender equality is your issue too, stated Emma Watson who is also the United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador. Her speech struck a chord with many and fanned the feminist fire that is, slowly but surely, being reignited.
According to Emma, feminism isn’t about burning bras and refusing to shave your leg hair. It’s about giving yourself or the women you care about the chance to be all that they can be without discrimination.
“Although we live in one of the best time periods in history for women to coexist with men, there is still so much separation between genders. Thank you, Emma Watson, for bringing this issue to international attention, because these acts of feminism-hating, inequality and slut-shaming need to come to an end.” stated Emma with a lot of confidence.
The reason Emma Watson invited men to join the conversation was that gender stereotypes also limit them. “Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong,” she said.
But while gender stereotypes can be suffocating to men too, it is women, girls and transgender people who face the lion’s share of boundaries and limitations.
Let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that men and women have the same stake in this drive for progress. Men wield power over women. That is the crux of the mater.
We salute this talented actor for taking such a stand. Way to go girl.
