Apart from Bollywood, the city seemed to glow more beautiful on Saturday as married women, women in love and women engaged to be married dressed up to celebrate Karva Chauth, the festival where women fast from sunrise to sunset for the safety and longevity of their husbands, fiancés and lovers.
The festival celebrated throughout North India mandates that the woman break her fast, after the moon rises. She has to first look at the moon though a sieve before having a glimpse of her husband’s face before she breaks her fast with something sweet, usually fed by her husband. This is a classic endearing scene of love that is usually showcased in Bollywood movies.
Traditionally, a woman does no housework on this day and instead meets relatives and friends. They also exchange pots filled with jewellery, cosmetics and other small gifts. There are different stories that are told in different regions about the origin of this festival.
