Box Office: PK Stands Straight At The End Of It’s First Weekend

pk-06Rajkumar Hirani’s PK has almost touched the 100 crore mark in it’s opening weekend, something that was a forgone conclusion.

PK, released in approximately five thousand screens in India and about eight hundred and twenty screens overseas, took a rock start start on day one (Friday), the second day (Saturday) was a bit slow but then on day three (Sunday), the film showed a huge jump in it’s collections.

PK has managed to collect about Rs 26.63 crore nett on Friday (December 19, 2014), Rs 30.34 crore nett on Saturday (December 20, 2014) and Rs 238.24 crore nett on Sunday (December 21, 2014); making it a total of about Rs 95.21 crore nett at the end of it’s first weekend.

The film has managed to get a positive response from the audience as well the critics and would very soon enter the 100 crore club.

PK, has also become the first film of India that will be tracked by Rentrak. Rentrak is the official agency that gives accurate Box Office figures of Hollywood films.

Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra took a joint decision to go with Rentrak as soon as they got to know about it.

“Commencing Rentrak operations in India, with tracking Box Office data is not only a landmark for us, but also for the Indian movie industry. Rentrak brings to India the expertise and experience of measuring box-office and serving movie industries in 40 countries. We trust the world will get to appreciate the true potential of Indian cinema, as much as the Indian industry gets to realize its own potential through the tools that Rentrak has created,” said Arturo Guillen, Vice President, Europe, Middle-East and Africa, in a press release.

PK now stands as the second biggest opening weekend grosser of the year after Happy New Year and has gone past films like Kick and Singham Returns.

Having said this, with PK, one also needs to factor in the higher ticket rates that have also contributed to the monies that that film has collected.

Up for release next week, December 26, 2014 is Ugly, which looks very lukewarm and this would prove to be a huge advantage to PK.
