Television Review: Private Investigator – Misses The Point

star plus-05Private Investigator on Star Plus is a detective drama series, which revolves around Raffe Roy Chaudhary who with his extraordinary observation skills goes about solving crimes that baffle even the police.

Raffe Roy Chaudhary (Mrinal Dutt), a twenty one year old criminology student, fashions himself as a Private Investigator as a result of his solitary upbringing and the unanswered questions about his past.

Equipped with nothing but his unique observational skills and superior intellect, he teams up with the Inspector Tiwari (Vrajesh Hirjee) to solve crimes with no apparent motives or suspects.

Raffe steps out in the dark and dangerous world of crime as the youngest private investigator solving one new case every week.

To add another layer to the show, we have Raffe’s personal life as well. He is emotionally attached to his mother, Anita Roy Chaudhary (Sandhya Mridul) who has kept him away from a dark secret about his past that could change his life forever. During this journey of unearthing mysteries, we will see the young Raffe becoming smarter, overcoming fears and understanding the world around him better.

If all this was enough, then we have Priya Chauhan essaying the role of Raffe’s love interest and last but not the least we have Muni Jha (Professor Desai) who helps Raffe solve cases.

It’s juvenile and amusing to see the way one has unfolded the back story of Raffe and his mother. Raffe Roy Choudhary’s mother, Anita Roy Choudhary (Sandhya Mridul), is seen running away from something or someone. She literally blows up her past to protect her future. In order to keep the young Raffe engrossed, she gives him puzzles to solve.

Now eighteen years later, Raffe has solved every puzzle he can think of and his latest fetish is to study the human puzzle. Just by looking at a person, Raffe is able to tell his profession, what he does and sometime even what he is thinking. Guess he should have been a magician.

Coming to the production, FreemantleMedia, the makes of Private Investigator have put up a shoddy product, with very low production values. I am sure if asked, they would say that they have tried to keep it real but then lets all realise that we are in a visual medium and cannot be seeing dark spaces all the time.

Just a reminder to the makers; guys you are making this show for an Indian audience and not to the ones in the west who are used to slicker products than is.

Private Investigator according to me, is just one one those regular weekend shows that will end up doing nothing.
