Television Review: Gulmohar Grand – It’s Only About High Production Values

star plus-17Gulmohar Grand, a weekly show that premiered on Star Plus a couple of weeks ago is all about a hotel and a mystery that surrounds it.

Gulmohar Grand is all about the staff and guests of this luxurious hospitality establishment. The show narrates a different story every week, entwined in this is the secret of Annie (Aakanksha Singh) and Aniruddh’s (Gaurav Chopra) failed marriage.

The owner of the hotel Mr. Jaitley (Madan Joshi) is a frail and old man who is depressed about his lost daughter.

Aniruddh is the Managing Director of the hotel and overlooks everything. His constant work keeps him away from his family and is the reason why his wife separated from him.

Annie, who is an Assistant in the Food and Beverage department has a secret no one knows. Playing the Head of Security is Ashim Gulathi as Neel Gujral.

Gulmohar Grand pampers their guests and cater to their every whim and fancy as long as you have the big bucks. Now the hotel is not set in Las Vegas, so we don’t know about their Casino provisions, but like any hotel it has the spa, the pool, the luxurious rooms and room service.

Being a one hour weekly, the show needed to move at a pace that should have been faster. One needed lots of twists and turns in the show to keep the audiences hooked not only for that one hour, but also wanting to come back next week to see the show.

Unfortunately, Gulmohar Grand lacks it all. The writing is very juvenile and the screenplay, that is if one can call it a screenplay, is just scenes put together. Motives and intents of characters are not clear. They are just sleep walking their roles.

The show lacks detailing and elements like the cleaning staff wearing an ear phone looks bizarre. You will not get to see this in the best and the most executive hotels in the world.

The exclusive suite of the hotel looks more like a normal room. Also the scene where one of the guests gets upset as his room was not cleaned from the past three days seems too far fetched and unreal.

The makers need to know that even in a small dilapidated road side hotel, the staff would clean the room at latest once a day and here we are talking about a palatial hotel.

All in all, the show looks grand, but then the content is sub standard.

Thank God, it’s only a twenty six episode series.
