Spice Girls Wannabe Is UK’s Catchiest Song

spice girls=01The Spice Girls debut song, Wannabe, has been named the UK’s catchiest song beating out some surprising competition.

Researchers for an online interactive game called Hooked on Music say that people could name the girl power anthem within 2.3 seconds of hearing it, compared with an average of five seconds for other popular songs.

The results were unveiled at the Manchester Science Festival overnight, which studied data from 12,000 participants. More than thousand songs were played from the 1940′s to today with participants asked if they recognised a song.

Wannabe, which spent seven weeks at number one in the UK during 1996, beat out Lou Bega’s Mambo No. 5, which people could name within 2.48 seconds.

Third was Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger, followed by Lady Gaga’s Just Dance and Abba’s SOS and Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman tied for fifth.

Overall, it took people an average of five seconds to recognise a clip from one of the UK’s best-selling records.

“Although this is just a casual observation on my part, very strong melodic hooks seem to be the most memorable for people.” stated Ashley Burgoyne, who devised the experiment.
