Sawyer Sweeten, who became a household name thanks to the endearing family sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, has committed suicide, on Thursday (April 23, 2015), his sister Madylin Sweeten said in a statement. He was only nineteen.
“This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred. We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his twentieth birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy.” Madylin Sweeten said in a statement passed on by her manager Dino May.
Writing on Facebook, she added: “At this time I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to the ones you love. Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you.”
According to a leading entertainment industry magazine, Sawyer Sweeten, who essayed the role of Geoffrey Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond, was visiting his family in Texas, where he is believed to have shot himself on the front porch.
Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton, who essayed the role of Sawyer Sweeten’s mother on the show, wrote on Twitter, “Sawyer Sweeten was a funny and exceptionally bright young man. He is gone from us far too soon. The entire cast of Everybody Loves Raymond is in shock. Prayers for the Sweeten family.”
Sawyer Sweeten was born in the year 1995 in Brownwood, Texas. He was only a year and a half old when he started to work on the sitcom, playing next to his real life twin brother Sullivan, who starred as Michael Barone,. Their sister, Madylin, played their reel life sister Ally Barone on the show.
Based on lead actor Ray Romano’s stand-up routines, the show was primarily about his strained relationship with his parents and his brother.
The children, especially the twins, had smaller, cameo moments. In the early years, they were too young to speak.
The series developed a loyal following in the US, and was shown by Channel 4 in the UK.
Everybody Loves Raymond developed a loyal following and ran from September 1996 through May 2005. Post the show ended, Sawyer Sweeten did not appear to take on acting roles.
