It’s a romantic comedy, it’s stars Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan and last but not the least it’s full of voice overs; well, we are talking about the movie Playing It Cool that has just been released.
Playing It Cool is all about a writer, who is the narrator of the film, Chris Evans. He wants to write action but his publisher Bryan (Anthony Mackie) wants him to write about romance first.
The problem is, the narrator doesn’t believe in love. But when he meets Her (Michelle Monaghan), he falls for her, only to find out that she is already engaged to Stuffy (Ioan Gruffudd).
Debuting feature director Justin Reardon has tried to make the film as a first person account and in the bargain has sucked the romance out of the film completely. Wow!! That’s quite an achievement.
Chris Evans who credits himself as Me, endlessly shares his inner thoughts, he lets us know he’s hamstrung by the fact his mother left him when he was a boy, scrawling a post-it note on a box of his favorite cereal and leaving him in the care his grandfather and that’s the reason why he can neither eat cereal nor can he feel love. Wow!! Once again an achievement.
Anyways, moving on, when Me gets to know about Her, he cannot get her out of his mind. When his writer friends trade stories of romance, he inserts himself, and Her, into the scenes, that are initially funny but the becomes quite mundane and boring.
Finally Me takes to the road to try to stop Her from getting hitched to her fiancee and the film finally ends. Wow!! Now that’s quite an achievement.
Playing It Cool has no script. It’s just scenes that have been put together and have been laced with voice overs and more voice overs.
The film stars actors like Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan, Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie and Topher Grace; all of whom seem to have been wasted.
All in all, the film is all about a writer, but is written poorly.
God spare me!!
