Imagine a world in which cities can actually move. Yes, that’s exactly what happens in Mortal Engines, a film which is based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve.
Civilization is destroyed, and not many have survived. London is now a giant predator on wheels and is search of resources. A mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) tries to stop the city but is unsuccessful. Now, with the help of Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), an outcast from London, and Anna Fang (Jihae), a dangerous outlaw, Hester again tries to bring the city and its evil ways to a halt.
Without wasting any time, it starts off with a long chase sequence, setting your expectations right away. The film tries to involve many things. There’s adventure, love, revenge, action and a lot more. There’s also a deadly machine-like creature. It becomes a bit clunky but most of it makes for an exciting watch. The climax, though predictable, keeps you on the edge of your seat.
It’ll be apt to say that the film mainly revolves around Hester Shaw’s character and Hera Hilmar does a fantastic job. This film shows that she’s a versatile actor. Robert Sheehan is good and so is Jihae. Hugo Weaving as Thaddeus Valentine is fine as the bad guy.
Mortal Engines will definitely kick start your weekend. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
