Mary Poppins Returns is dreamy, unrealistic, too good to be true but also very enjoyable.
The film opens with a song and your mood is set for a story interspersed with a lot of songs. And that’s exactly what you get.
For the uninitiated, this film is a sequel and the first part was made 50 years ago. Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) is a single parent to three kids – Annabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh) and Georgie (Joel Dawson). His wife recently passed away and he’s finding it tough to manage everything. His sister Jane (Emily Mortimer) is giving him a helping hand. If the current situation wasn’t bad enough, they might now even lose their house due to non-payment of installments. That’s when Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), the perfect nanny, descends from the skies using her umbrella and tries to (magically) solve everything.
There are many songs and most of them are quite fun to watch. My personal favourite was the one underwater. The story is a bit weak but that’s taken care of due to the umpteen songs and the way they’re shot and executed. Having said that, some songs could’ve been chopped as the film seems too long.
The performances are great. Emily Blunt is excellent while all the kids – Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh & Joel Dawson are wonderful. Ben Whishaw is good.
Mary Poppins Returns is a magical film can be watched by kids and adults alike. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
