Feature Name: First Man
We all know Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. But do you really know his story? His personal life, the risks he took and what went behind the entire mission? Well, First Man tells us exactly that. Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) braves the death of his daughter and gives an interview for the moon mission. His wife Janet Armstrong (Claire Foy), supports him despite knowing how risky the mission is. The scene in which Neil discusses the possibility of him never coming back with his children is so well done.
Based on the book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R. Hansen, this film never goes overboard. The space scenes and the scenes in which they are testing for the mission are superbly shot and executed. The background score is just perfect. One concern over the film is that it never really shows us other characters in detail apart from Armstrong. Also, the execution is way too subtle and even the climax fails to impress.
Ryan Gosling delivers an excellent and restrained performance. Claire Foy is good. All the other actors are fine.
So, First Man has its moments but they are few and far between. We give the film 2.5 stars with a small kink.
