Ever wondered what would happen if your height was 5 inches? Sounds crazy, right? Well, this is what exactly happens in Downsizing.
The film starts off with a successful science experiment on a rat. The scientists basically reduce its size before trying it on humans. They come up this idea as a solution to over-population. After considering all possibilities, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to downsize themselves. But something unexpected happens (which we can’t reveal because it would be a spoiler), and it makes Paul almost regret his decision.
Directed by Alexander Payne, Downsizing is a weird film. It works at an idea level but the execution falters. It’s as if the makers weren’t clear on what to do with the concept. It raises some very valid and rather worrying points about how we might become extinct but the way it does is quite disappointing. It also feels really long and boring in a lot of portions. If anything, the length of the film should’ve been really downsized.
Matt Damon acts really well. Kristen Wiig is fine. Hong Chau is excellent as she plays a Vietnamese activist.
Downsizing is a confused film which lacks direction. We give the film 2.5 stars with small kinks.
