However, the lease on the Harpo Studios, where Oprah Winfrey’s show was filmed for decades, runs until April 2016.
Harpo Studios had been at the center of her broadcast universe since it opened in 1990, hosting her syndicated daily talk show through it’s finale.
Oprah Winfrey had moved to California in 2011 to helm the Oprah Winfrey Network, her cable channel.
Executives with Oprah Winfrey Network and Harpo Studios stated that the Chicago studios will be moved to network facilities in West Hollywood, California by December 2015.
There are about two hundred employees working at the Harpo Studios in Chicago, doing production work for Oprah Winfrey Network shows such as Super Soul Sunday, Oprah’s Master Class, Oprah: Where Are They Now, Oprah Prime and Iyanla: Fix My Life.
As of now the work will continue in Chicago, but most of those jobs will be phased out as production on these shows will now happen from her new base in West Hollywood, California.
A small group of Harpo Studios employees from Chicago have been offered jobs with Oprah Winfrey Network in Los Angeles, others may have the opportunity to continue working on the shows on a freelance basis.
“Harpo Studios in Chicago was not just my home but also my life for nearly thirty years. I’ve spent more time there than anywhere else. I am so proud of what we created. It has been a blessing in my life and I thank everyone who has been a part of this great run. I am now looking ahead to inhabiting the new space on The Lot in California and carrying on the legacy of Harpo Studios with OWN programming.” stated Oprah Winfrey in an official statement.
