Cannes 2015: Proud Moment For Indian Cinema As Masaan Gets A Standing Ovation

cannes-43It was a proud moment for Indian Cinema, when Masaan, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, was screened at the 68th Cannes Film Festival and received a five minute long standing ovation at the end.

Masaan, set in Varanasi is all collage of stories about a young man from a low caste, an orphan who collects coins from the river bed, a receptionist at a coaching centre and her father, who is a pandit. The young man falls in love with a high-caste girl. The receptionist finds herself in the middle of a sex scandal. The pandit fights taboos and the orphan finds a father figure.

The film stars Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha, Shweta Tripathi and Vicky Kaushal.cannes-41The entire team was present at Cannes and post the screening took on to Twitter to express their joy.

“Got teary at the five minute long standing ovation. Thank you everyone. Neeraj Ghaywan, first thanks to you.” tweeted Richa Chadda.

“Broke down at the unstoppable applause. Thanks everyone! Missed you so much Anurag Kashyap, editor Nitin Baid and Avinash Arun.” wrote the director Neeraj Ghaywan, who has assisted Anurag Kashyap on his two part crime drama Gangs Of Wasseypur.

According to Neeraj, Masaan as a story of escape. He said in an interview, “It is about the people living in small towns in India and their attempt of escaping the conventional mindset, the rigid social structure.” The idea of Masaan came to Ghaywan years ago, when someone told him about the Dom community, which carries out cremations and is therefore considered outcast.cannes-42It took three years and partnering with lyricist, writer and stand-up comedian Varun Grover to complete the films script.

Masaan, which means crematorium in Hindi, is one of two Indian films being screened in the Un Certain Regard section. The other bing the Punjabi film Chauthi Koot.

Masaan is produced by Phantom Films.
