Based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir of the same name, Boy Erased is a very sensitive film.
Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges) is the 18-year-old son of car dealer and Baptist preacher Marshall Eamons (Russell Crowe) and self-styled hairdresser Nancy Eamons (Nicole Kidman). After he opens up to them about being gay, they send him for a conversion programme, hoping that he would ‘become’ straight.
The film is many things clubbed into one – a gay boy coming out to his parents, how their relationship changes, conversion centres and more importantly how the boy deals with everything. And they film deals with everything in the most sensitive way possible. Many scenes will leave you disturbed and angry. Some will also make you choke on many occasions.
Lucas Hedges is brilliant and he makes his character so very believable. Nicole Kidman is superb. Russell Crowe delivers a good performance. Joel Edgerton plays his part really well.
Boy Erased is a very fine film that shouldn’t be missed. We give it four stars with a big kink.
