There are some films for which I just land up at the theatre without knowing anything about them. I don’t know what the film is about and deliberately don’t watch its trailer. Borg McEnroe is one such film and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
The film is basically about the rivalry between two tennis players – the icy cool Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and the hot-headed John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf). Both had very different personalities and the way they approached the game and their contradictions, made their rivalry all the more interesting.
My only grouse about the film is that it’s biased and tells more about Borg. It shows more about Borg’s childhood, his journey and his coach. Very less is told about McEnroe and his life story. Apart from that, the film is top-notch. If you are tennis fan, it’ll seem as if you’re actually watching all the action live. It just takes you there and the background music only adds to the tensions. Editing is superb as the narrative moves back and forth with quite smoothly.
Sverrir Gudnason is simply outstanding as he plays a character who doesn’t say much and is full of contradictions. Shia LaBeouf is good. Stellan Skarsgård, who plays Borg’s coach Lennart Bergelin, is wonderful.
This film is a must watch, doesn’t matter if you’re a tennis fan or not. We give it 3.5 stars with a big kink.
PS: Don’t google anything about the actual events and results. You’ll love the film more.
