Big Bank Hank, died from kidney complications due to cancer.
The group’s manager confirmed the death of Big Bank Hank and stated that his bandmates Wonder Mike and Master Gee were informed of the news.
The three friends were unknown MCs when producer Sylvia Robinson recruited them to record the song for her rap label, Sugar Hill Records.
Big Bank Hank, known in his songs as the grandmaster with 3 MCs that shock the house for the young ladies, rapped in his verses about competing with Superman for Lois Lane.
Big Bank Hank, who was born Henry Jackson, is well-known for his single Rapper’s Delight. The record sold several million copies worldwide and helped establish rap as the genre it is today.
The multiplatinum hit was one of the first rap songs played on the radio and became the first hip-hop single to become a Top Forty Billboard chart hit.
In the year 2011, Rolling Stone had ranked Rapper’s Delight at No. 248 on it’s list of the five hundred Greatest Songs of All Time.
“I see groups that are hot one minute and next time you see them they’re asking if you want a soda with that Happy Meal. We’ve had the ability to transcend generations and that’s a gift. That’s a blessing and I’m grateful for that.” Big Bank Hank had stated way back in 2013.
In a statement, Wonder Mike and Master Gee expressed their condolences to Big Bank Hank’s family.
“So sad to hear about our brother’s passing. The three of us created musical history together with the release of Rapper’s Delight. We will always remember traveling the world together and rocking the house. Rest in peace Big Bank.” they shared.
