Veena Malik, who along with her husband, Asad Bashir Khan Khattak, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, owner of Geo TV and Jang Group (one of the biggest media group in the Asian country) and television host Shaista Wahidi for twenty six years each in jail for blasphemy by a Pakistan court.
Post the verdict, Veena Malik stated that she has faith in higher courts and nothing bad is going to happen to them.
“Twenty six years! Come on. Twenty six years is a lifetime. But I have faith in higher courts in Pakistan. When the final verdict comes, it will do justice to me. Nothing bad is going to happen,” stated Veena Malik to a leading tabloid a day after the verdict.
An anti-terrorism court in Gilgit-Baltistan sentenced all four of them for twenty six year in jail for a show that reenacted Veena Malik and Asad Bashir Khan Khattak’s wedding to the tunes a religious qawwali. The four were convicted for blasphemy and have been branded as absconders.
However, Veena Malik, in her reaction, said she had faith in Pakistan’s judiciary. Veena Malik, who lives in Dubai, said she would return to Pakistan in December 2014.
“I have faced highs and lows in my life. But I am sure I haven’t done anything wrong,” she was quoted as saying.
Veena and her husband had in May this year reenacted their wedding to the tune of a contemptuous qawwali on a Geo TV show.
Post the verdict Veena Malik took on to Twitter and wrote, “Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.”
Many found the whole act blasphemous and several police complaints were filed against the owner of the television channel that telecast the show, the woman who anchored the show and Veena and her husband, Asad, for agreeing to take part.
In the Geo TV show first telecast, Veena is seen dressed as a bride and the host, Shaista, is seen introducing her to the audience as the mock marriage ceremony begins with a group of qawwals singing. Geo TV and Shaista Wahidi had later apologised for the show.
We just hope that all of this settles down as soon as possible.
