First and foremost, there’s a dearth of political films made in India and so it’s refreshing to see The Accidental Prime Minister. And the icing on the cake is that it’s a pretty good film.
Based on the book with the same name, The Accidental Prime Minister is about former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh (Anupam Kher) during his tenure. It’s also about the relationship with his media advisor Sanjaya Baru (Akshaye Khanna). In 2004 after winning the elections, Sonia Gandhi (Suzanne Bernert) decided to not be the Prime Minister and chose Dr. Manmohan Singh for the position. After some time, Dr. Singh appointed Sanjaya as his media advisor. Sanjaya not only used to also help Dr. Singh maintain his media image, but he used to also help him when he faced any professional crisis.
The film is a worthy attempt to tell us what happens behind closed doors. It also tells us things about Dr. Manmohan Singh and others which we perhaps wouldn’t know. While the first half is quite gripping, it loses momentum in the second half. Some situations and key milestones are hurriedly shown. The pacing is just perfect and manages to hold your attention.
Anupam Kher plays Dr. Manmohan Singh perfectly. And we are saying this not just because he walks and talks like him. He has played the full character really well. Akshaye Khanna is excellent and proves yet again what a fine actor he is. All the other actors are fine in their respective roles.
While the film focuses largely on how Baru struggled with managing Dr. Singh’s public image, it also touches upon United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s key milestones, like the nuclear deal and Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s undisputed authority within the party.
The Accidental Prime Minister is a pretty decent political drama with exceptional performances. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
