The Shaukeens is a remake of the 1982 release, cult-classic comedy film Shaukeen. The latest film, much like the original movie, tells the story of three lecherous old men who want to spice up their old age.
In the old film, the three lecherous men played by Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal go to Goa for some enjoyment.
In The Shaukeens, the three men – Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Anupam Kher – go to Mauritius. Director Abhishek Sharma has managed to retain the old script but has added humour that is below the belt and crass.
This film is a disaster alright, but it is somewhat mitigated by a quirky, if uneven, subplot that has Akshay Kumar playing himself and poking constant fun at the work that he has done thus far as a Bollywood actor.
Lisa Haydon, the lead actress of the movie, sizzles with minimal clothes and it ends there for her as we would not want to talk about her acting skills at all.
All we can say about Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Anupam Kher is, if stalwarts like them begin accepting such characters, then what can we expect from others? It’s a shame to see such talent do all this.
What’s even more surprising is the fact that The Shaukeens as been written by Tigmanshu Dhulia as the film majorly faults in its writing.
After seeing The Shaukeens one wonders why someone would try and re-create a cult film, because in the end, the result would be a Box Office disaster. Haven’t we learnt from films like Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (Sholay) and the very recent O Teri (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro).
One is very happy that none of the actors (Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal) are alive to see the disaster called The Shaukeens.
Devoid of the innocence and spontaneity that helped the three older comedians rise above their limitations and attain longevity, The Shaukeens has proved why the classics should be left alone.
All in all, The Shaukeens looks like a wannabe sex comedy that should be avoided.
Below the belt jokes, crass humour and cheap antics - that's what The Shaukeens is all about. The Shaukeens is a remake of the 1982 release, cult-c...0.5
