The film has everything, a great concept, superlative performances, R. Balki’s midas touch but there is something that is missing and that’s what Amitabh Bachchan starrer Shamitabh is all about.
It was in the year 1990, that Mr. Bachchan experimented with his voice in the film Agneepath, produced by the late Yash Johar and we all know what happened, one sees Shamitabh going the same way.
Shamitabh is all about Danish (Dhanush), who is a mute Marathi boy, simply in love with films. After a lot of debacles, he manages to arrive in Mumbai, but is unable to convey his intensity to anybody other than a assistant director Akshara (Akshara Haasan).
In walks a cynical, drunkard and a filed actor Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan). Danish gets a voice and his search for the perfect baritone ends and thus starts his journey to stardom.
A newly found Bollywood superstar addresses the media and stresses on the fact that he is here to stay. The basic idea of watching Dhanush with Amitabh Bachchan’s voice is what makes you uncomfortable after a point.
The film is then pushed into becoming an ego battle between Danish and Amitabh and that’s where one starts getting a bit bored.
With Shamitabh, director R. Balki has proved that he is no scared to experiment, he is not scared to push the envelope as much as possible but the only mistake that he has done with this one is the fact that he messed up the Voice Of God.
The film has Rekha telling Danish (Dhanush), “Take care of your face, and also your voice. It’s the god’s voice.”
Much like R. Balki’s previous films, Cheeni Kum and Paa, Shamitabh too is unconventional and has a wonderful premise but some where it lacks soul and this could be mainly because of Mr. Bachchan’s voice being used on Dhanush.
Akshara Haasan will remind you of her mother Sarika. She is sexy, she is cute and she has a terrific screen presence.
All in all, this one would be appreciated only by a specific set of audience and is not for the masses.
Never the less the film is worth a watch!!
