Ek Adbhut Dakshina Guru Dakshina starts as a film that’s all about Chhau, a genre of Indian tribal martial dance which is popular in the Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, suddenly becomes a love story and if this was not enough it is laced with a Naxalite track.
Adbhut Dakshina Guru Dakshina is all about Dev (Rajeev Govinda Pillai), who has been adopted by Guruji (Girish Karnad) and brought to his dance academy in Kolkata, owing to his dancing skills.
Dev is a great dancer and Guruji is very impressed with his dedication towards his craft. In all of this, walks in Guruji’s daughter, Sanjukta (Sulagna Panigrahi) and Dev falls madly in love with her.
Sanjukta is totally in oblivion of Dev’s love and is attracted towards Gambhira (Rajesh Shringarpure) instead, who has a looming mystery around him.
One cannot make out his intent and as the story progress we get to know that Gambhira is a Naxalite, on a secret mission.
Predictably so, it’s Dev is one who suspects Gambhira’s motives and warns Sanjukta but she feels that Dev is doing all this as he wants to malige Gambhira, typical case of a jilted lover.
Sanjukta secretly marries Gambhira and post marriage, Gambhira shows his true colours. Wow!! That’s so fresh and never seen before.
Coming to the performances, Ek Adbhut Dakshina Guru Dakshina belongs to Rajesh Shringarpure, remember Sanjay Somji in Sarkar Raj (2008). Well, he belts out a stellar performance.
Both Rajeev Govinda Pillai and Sulagna Panigrahi disappoint, while Girish Karnad and Roopa Ganguly have hardly anything to do, thanks to the script.
As a film, Adbhut Dakshina Guru Dakshina looks wishy washy as there are too many issues in one. There was no need to have dance as a backdrop because after some time the film minders into a love triangle and issues related to Naxalites.
Guess the makers should have seen Lal Pahare’r Katha, a film directed by Remo D’Souza on Chhau. Maybe we could have got to see some dance.
