A few months ago, Raveena Tandon starred in a film called Maatr. In the film, the mother and her daughter are gang raped and brutally injured. The daughter succumbs to injuries and after the rapists are acquitted by the law, Raveena’s character plots her revenge. You can’t help but notice the plot similarity while watching Mom.

In Mom, Srivedi plays biology teacher Devki Sabarwal. Her step daughter Arya (Sejal Ali), who’s also one of her students, refuses to accept her as her mother. She calls her ‘ma’am’. After a party, she’s gang raped, brutally assaulted and thrown out of the car in which she was raped. She survives but since she was under the influence of alcohol, her statement isn’t validated by the court. And since there’s no ‘sufficient evidence’ against the rapists, they are set free. With the help of private detective, Daya Shankar Kapoor (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), Devki is on a mission to make sure the rapists pay for what they did. But CBI inspector Mathew Francis (Akshaye Khanna), who’s handling the case, wants to make sure they don’t go against the law.

Mom is an improved version of Maatr. The sets are grander and the production values are better. But it still feels repetitive and predicable. To be fair, there are a lot of gripping moments in the film. The cuts are superlative and polished and you’re involved in the happenings. On the other hand, they could do away with the loud background score. And you can’t help but laugh out loud at the ludicrous last scene.

The performances elevate Mom to a great extent. Sridevi is a class apart. The scene in which she breaks down in the hospital deserves a special mention. Akshaye Khanna is in good form. But it’s Nawazuddin Siddique who steals the show. He is absolutely brilliant and gives his quirky character all that he’s got. His scene in a ‘modern art’ gallery will leave you in splits! Sajal Ali is decent. Adnan Siddiqui, who plays Sridevi’s husband, is fine in his small role.

Despite some excellent performances, Mom’s predictable plot makes it an above average affair. Sridevi and Nawazuddin surely deserved more.

We give Mom 2.5 stars with a kink.
