Mercury Review: This Wordless Thriller Will Leave You Speechless

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Mercury is a silent thriller film starring Prabhu Deva, Indhuja, Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan.

Despite giving us all a wordless horror flick, the first scene breaks into a loud party where the leads are grooving to the music. The film concentrates on the menace of industrial chemicals which later turns the town into a living graveyard. We have seen poignant dramas whose focus is on pollution of the earthy elements due to industrial waste, Mercury does justice to its title.

A group of five friends – four boys, one girl; each mute, who are currently in the celebration mode of their college alumni drop upon a dead body (Prabhu Deva) while driving in the midnight to a southern valley. To save themselves from the ruthless law, they dump the body near an abandoned chemical plant Corpor-’ate’ Earth and rush to lead a normal day. However, the same bunch of people return to the burial spot as they lose an evidence near the dead body. While they get what they lost at the spot, the girl goes missing. Later, the group is hounded by a vicious and violent creature who has dealt with the same troublesome life – given by the chemical poisoning of Mercury. The desire to save each other from the wrath of the dead, each friend start losing their lives.

Prabhu Deva, the choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director-turned-actor shines brightly in this silent horror. This group of youngsters – Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan have done a decent job in the movie. It is the heavy sound design and the melancholic music score by Santhosh Narayanan that leaves the audience on-the-edge-of-your-seat situation.

We would give brownie points to a single shot where Prabhu Deva is prowling out of darkness, and his fingers can’t stop dancing to the metal music. The beautiful synchronization of a piano interlude in the background score creates more drama, leaving us all thrilled for real!

We give Mercury 3 stars with a kink!
