Manikarnika, based on the life of Jhansi Ki Rani, is a pretty decent film.
It traces the life of Manikarnika aka Rani Laxmi Bai (Kangana Ranaut) from her childhood. Mainly for her valor and fighting skills, she’s got a shaadi ka rishta from Jhansi, which she accepts and so becomes the rani. She genuinely respects the people of Jhansi and it shows. When Jhansi is asked to surrender by the East India Company, she rages war on them. Sar jhukana is not an option for her.
Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi & Kangana Ranaut, the film takes its time to grow on you. The first half is mostly spent in showing Manikarnika’s childhood and how she became Jhansi Ki Rani. It’s in the second half that the pace picks up with plenty of war & action scenes. It’s totally gripping.
A scene that impressed me the most comes in the second half where Manikarnika single-handedly slays almost 15-20 East India Company men like a boss. It seemed very real and gave me goosebumps.
Kangana Ranaut takes her acting to a different level through this film. She’s particularly good in the action scenes. Ankita Lokhande acts well in her small role. Danny Denzongpa is excellent.
Watch Manikarnika for Kangana’s performance and an engrossing narrative. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
