My review for Main Aur Charles is coming a bit late all thanks to the PR agency which is handling the film. She said that the theatre booked for the press show was full. How large was the auditorium, I wonder. 20-seater? Anyway, I finally had to watch it first day first show in a regular show.
Main Aur Charles is about the famous conman and serial killer Charles Sobhraj (Randeep Hooda) who is also famously known as the ‘Bikini Killer’. The movie showcases the journey of Charles – from escaping from Thailand to how he did the infamous jail break in Delhi. Amod Kanth (Adil Hussain) is on a mission to imprison the ‘Bikini Killer’ again. Robert (Alex O’Nell), a jail-mate of Charles and a criminal law student, Meera Sharma (Richa Chaddha) tell their story of meeting Charles. The story moves forward like a cat and mouse race between Charles and Amod.
Prawaal Raman, who has written the script, tries to show the audiences something that they already know. He fails to go deep into the life of Charles. The screenplay is tight, but the excitement is missing. Whatever you have read about Charles is shown in the film. The movie offers nothing new when it comes to the life story of the con artist. It looks like the writer-director concentrated more on styling of the film than the script.
Raman has tried his best to direct this Bollywood movie like a Hollywood-style period movie. However, he succeeds in bits and parts. As we said, he has worked very well on the styling of the film. From the sets to the clothes everything will remind you of the 70s and 80s. But, we wish Raman had concentrated more on the storyline and the narration style. As a package, Main Aur Charles just turns out to be below average. Cinematography done by Anuj Rakesh Dhawan is good, while editing by Nipun Gupta is not impressive at all.
However, the movie wins in the casting department. Randeep Hooda has given the best performance of his career. He sinks into the character of Charles wonderfully. From walking to smoking to mouthing those dialogues in French accent, the actor proves that he is surely one of the most talented actors of Bollywood. Richa Chadha has acted superbly, but she looks a bit old to play the role of a law student. Adil Hussain is just exceptional in the film. We wish we get to see him in such powerful roles more. Alex O’Nell is strictly okay.
The music is fine and suits the film’s theme. However, it is not great.
