A witness in the trial of Salman Khan who is facing serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder for killing a pavement dweller and injuring four others in a 2002 case testified that Salman Khan was sitting in the driver’s seat before the vehicle left JW Marriott, Juhu.
A attendant working at the hotel was the first witness on the stands in the trial. In his examination in chief by the public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat, he said he had seen Salman Khan sitting in the vehicle while it was stationary outside the restaurant before they left. He said he saw Salman Khan’s body guard standing outside on the right side of the vehicle and Kamal Khan sitting behind in the back seat behind the actor.
In the cross examination later by Salman Khan’s lawyer Shrikant Shivade who quizzed Kalpesh Verma, the witness, about the exact location of Kamal Khan, he said he was sitting in the backseat but on the left side of the vehicle.
Kalpesh Verma, the parking assistant said that Salman Khan got behind the wheel of the land cruiser at the hotel. He also said that Salman also tipped him Rs 500 before he left.
The hit and run incident dates back to 2002 in which one person had died while four others had been injured. Salman was charged with an additional charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder that is liable for a ten year sentence.
There have been several twists and turns in the twelve year hit and run case in the past too. In August, 2014, the Mumbai Police had told the court that the case diary has gone missing in addition to fifty five of the sixty three case related documents which were already missing.
The court has asked the prosecution to file a report on the next plan of action and the next hearing has been scheduled soon.
Salman Khan was present in court and kept standing all through the trial proceedings at the back of the court room in which Justice D.W. Deshpande was presiding.
