As it is, there was a looming threat thanks to the rain gods. The heavy thundershowers did push back the ceremony by one and a half hours, but could not dampen the enthusiasm and excitement of the crowd, that stuck to their seats waiting for the stars to set the stage on fire.
Well post the delay, in walked the emcee, Saif Ali Khan, who fell flat as he could not conduct the ceremony with the confidence it commanded. One saw him fumble most of the time making it look very juvenile and unrehearsed.
Also, there were a few non functional LED lights which looked ghastly and last but not the least it was Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, who stepped on a light, thus messing up things further.Shahid Kapoor took center stage in a bright orange sleeveless shirt and shiny golden dhoti with a trendy pair of shades, atop a bike. The audience went ballistic seeing Shahid make this grand entry, but then he tumbled.
Shahid did try to camouflage it, but then his entire act looked washed out. His act did not manage to create the magic that was expected out of him and was just a medley of songs put together from his latest films and has nothing unique about it.
This was followed by composer Pritam giving a choral tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in an operatic rendition of his famed song Anandaloke Mangalaloke.
This act by Pritam, kind of made amends of all that was going wrong during the Indian Premier League 2015 opening ceremony.Coming to Anushka Sharma, well she tried her best to captivate the audience with her act, but then this one too fell flat as the act was very typical and has nothing to look forward to.
What was surprising was the fact that the lady looked very nervous throughout her fact and that kind of was a damper.
Also, her black and golden jumpsuit looked hideous and one kept wondering why did Anushka Sharma choose to wear something as ghastly as this.
This was followed by Farhan Akhtar, who did all that he could to make the opening ceremony of Indian Premier League 2015 a memorable one.
Starting off with a poem from his film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Farhan and his band, took the stage and hummed songs like Rock On, Sindbad the Sailor and Senorita. However, the highlight of the evening was Hrithik Roshan, who kind of made up for all the lost ground.
In the cool night air, Hrithik’s fiery act against the backdrop of dazzling strobing lights and psychedelic floor projections stole the show.
For him, it was a nostalgic moment was he had his maiden live act after his debut in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai at the very same venue.
Hrithik made sure the Kolkata crowd got to see his best moves in his second show here. His emotional, but electrifying performance mirrored the sprit of the Indian Premier League.
The opening ceremony concluded when Gautam Gambhir, the leading man of the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, went up and put the trophy back in play.
Indian Premier League Season 8 stars today, April 08, 2105 and will have it’s finale on May 24, 2015.
