Movie Name: Gully Boy
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, Kalki Koechlin
Director: Zoya Akhtar
There’s a scene in Gully Boy in which Murad (Ranveer Singh), who’s at that time working as a driver, can’t console his crying co-passenger. He really wants to but can’t because she’s his malken and there’s a huge class difference between them. There are many such moving scenes in this Zoya Akhtar film that make it special.
Murad is from a small chawl in Mumbai’s Dharavi area. He wants a better life and dreams of becoming a rapper. Safeena (Alia Bhatt) is his girlfriend and they both support each other immensely. Murad meets rapper MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and his life takes a dramatic turn. MC Sher is instrumental in training Murad to become a rapper. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. Why you ask? Well, you must see the film to find that out.
Inspired by the life of underground rappers Divine and Naezy, Gully Boy is not just about the rap scene in India. It also talks about many social issues like classism & poverty. Like Murad says, it’s also about altering your sacchai (reality) to make your sapne (dreams) come true.
While the first half is flows like a cool breeze, the second half seems a tad long. Sky (Kalki Koechlin), who plays a music student, suddenly disappears only to come back when the film is about to end. Also, the multiple raps begin to almost annoy you after a point.
Dialogues by Vijay Maurya deserve a special mention. “Agar duniya mein sab comfortable hote, toh rap kaun karta?” says MC Sher. The film is full of such fabulous dialogues.
Ranveer Singh is so genuine & fabulous that we can’t tell you. It’s easily one of his finest performances. And Alia Bhatt is wonderful. Her character is a fuljhadi and she plays it with aplomb. Siddhant Chaurvedi aces it in his debut film. All the other actors are good in their respective roles.
So is Gully Boy a good film? Yes. Is it a great film? Umm no. Should you still go and watch it? Yes. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
