Five Dark-Comedy Bollywood Movies That Were Critically Acclaimed

India is a country where the audience mostly enjoys comedy, romance, dance, emotional and other basic genres. So, dark comedy is a genre where only a few daring directors & actors step-in to experiment with the story. Dark Comedy is a genre, where the theme plays around serious & often unspoken scenarios in a slightly comical way. We curated some movies which even though didn’t do well at Box Office but got critically acclaimed. We also suggest you watch these movies if you haven’t already!


1. Kaalakaandi (2017)

A Saif Ali Khan & Sobhita Dhulipala starrer, the movie revolves around the protagonist Rileen (Khan) who knows that he’s diagnosed with stomach cancer. He decides to live life to the fullest, by smoking and taking LSD from a friend, but yet remains unhappy. There are also other stories simultaneously unfolding within the movie, which will make you laugh for sure.



2. Delhi Belly (2011)

It was rated A, for its language of profanities & dark content. This movie has Imran Khan, Vir Das, & Vijay Raaz in it so you can imagine the level of comedy in it. But, mind you! The story unfolds in a shady area of Delhi, almost in greed of money, & misunderstandings. The movie also has a camaraderie of Aamir Khan dancing on the song I Hate You.


3. Blackmail (2018)

It has too many characters, & many unexpected plot twists. So if you don’t pay heed to minor details, you may miss the movie. This Irrfan Khan starrer is gripping & will keep you hooked until the last bit. So yes, I may blackmail you to watch the movie, because it’s so good!


4. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, this movie was much ahead of its time. Though it failed to grab commercial success, it has now earned the status of ‘cult’. The movie revolves around scandals that happen in politics & business. The movie was re-released in 2012 in selected theaters which were welcomed by the audience.


5. Peepli Live (2010)

Produced under the banner, ‘Aamir Khan Productions’ this movie was a satirical take on rising in farmers’ suicide rate in India, & how political personalities & media responds to it. The movie has talented actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Malaika Shenoy to name a few. The movie is equally entertaining & inspiring, to say the least.

So, these were the movies which were loved immensely by critics & made a mark in Bollywood film industry. The actors in the aforementioned movies also did phenomenal acting, due to which the notch of dark-comedy & cult status was achieved.
