Dedicated to Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel Devdas, Sudhir Mishra’s DaasDev is a contemporary spin set up at the backdrop of politics in Uttar Pradesh.
A bunch of tremendously malleable actors – Rahul Bhat, Richa Chadha, and Aditi Rao Hydari – with the supporting cast of Saurabh Shukla, Vipin Sharma, Sohaila Kapur, Ekavali Khanna, Anil George, Deepraj Rana and Vineet Kumar Singh takes the political drama forward with a good plotline.
The loud and irrepressible characters in a story of love, who possess certain secrets keep the story going headstrong till the end. The film seeks to draw attention to many issues – land rights, farmers’ issues, indiscriminate bauxite mining and political adventurism.
The need to set their foot in the power-hungry world makes this one an explicit drama. What caught our eye was the women in Daas Dev are no more damsels in distress. The women-characters are strong-willed, assertive individuals. Chandni is the real master-planner in Daas Dev, taking the weight of all the twists and turns on her bare shoulders.
The male protagonist, Dev Pratap Chauhan played by Rahul Bhat carries the role of a drunken wreck with ease. His mind addled with drugs and drinks, Dev is driven by the imposed need to carry his father’s legacy forward.
Richa Chadha as Paro makes her a perfect fit for the role. Her need to reach the heights is no less than a topsy-turvy ride.
Overall, Daas Dev is an amazing celluloid experience to watch out for!
We give this film 3.5 stars with a big kink!
