It’s A Curtain Call For Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

ddlj-02It’s finally come to an end. Maratha Mandir Cinema in Mumbai showed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, for the very last time this morning (February 19, 2015), after it began playing on October 19, 1995. An audience of about two hundred and ten watched the final show.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge ran for a total of one thousand nine weeks, that makes it almost twenty years.

“Post the thousand week celebrations last December, the theatre had requested Yash Raj Films to prepone the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge morning show to 09:15 am instead of 11:30 am as it was becoming difficult for the cinema to accommodate multiple new releases every week with just three regular shows. Of course Yash Raj Films obliged from February 13, 2015. However, while the theatre management was happy to continue the film for as long as it continued to draw in the audiences, owing to logistical issues of their staff having to work inordinately long hours to accommodate an additional early morning show, it was mutually decided to end the films historic and record breaking run. After playing for a thousand nine uninterrupted weeks, the films unprecedented performance has come to an end at the Maratha Mandir. The film played out in the 09:15 am show today for the last time at the theatre.” read the official statement from Yash Raj Films.

The tickets for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were sold at Rs 20, Rs 17 and Rs 15, much cheaper than the prices charged by multiplexes.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge‘s thousand and nine week uninterrupted run makes it the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema, a record previously held by 1975 blockbuster Sholay which ran in Mumbai’s Minerva Theatre for five years.

Dilwale Duhania Le Jayenge was Aditya Chopra’s first film as director and starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Satish Shah, Parmeet Sethi and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles.
