It took 12 years for Sanjay Leela Bhansali to make his dream come true. His magnum opus Bajirao Mastani has hit the screens today. The film is surely one of the most awaited films since the past 12 years. So, is it worth the wait? Let’s find out…
The movie is about Peshwa Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) who wins a battle in Bundelkhand and gets attracted to the king’s daughter, Mastani (Deepika Padukone). This is followed by a situation after which Mastani takes Bajirao to be her husband, but the Peshwa king has no idea of this. To give her marriage a legal name, Mastani comes to Pune where Bajirao is living with his wife Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra). The story moves forward with Bajirao and Mastani’s unconditional love for each other and how they overcome hurdles for their love. The story is all about how you face unbelievable difficulties to be with your loved one.
The movie is based on the book ‘Rau’, but Prakash Kapadia’s screenplay adaptation for the movie is excellent. The detailing about everything is really good; you are not left lost wondering about the characters or the era. One cannot ignore that the first half of the film is a bit slow and might bore you. However, the songs set the pace of the film. The second half is superb; it keeps us engaged in every scene. The climax is the best part of the film; it leaves a lasting impact. Dialogues are mind-blowing throughout the film. The hard-hitting dialogues will be remembered for years.
This is actually not a film, it’s a dream. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has earlier proved that he is a maestro, but with Bajirao Mastani he breaks his record of making great films like ‘Devdas’ and ‘Black’. His direction exceeds the benchmark set by him. The way he has narrated this period love story clearly shows that SLB has given his heart and soul. Like we said, in the screenplay there were a lot of detailing; in his direction, SLB goes in depth to narrate the story. He has made this film on a huge canvas and has not left any stone unturned to make it one of the biggest films of Indian Cinema. Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography is good and Rajesh Pandey’s editing is superb.
Well, it’s a period film, so the costumes play a very important role in it. Anju Modi and Maxima Basu have done a brilliant job with the costumes. Be it Mastani’s anarkalis or Kashibai’s navvaris – they are just stunning.
Everyone was surprised when it was announced that Ranveer Singh will play the role of Peshwa Bajirao on screen. But, the actor shuts all naysayers with his act. Ranveer’s performance is so good that he indisputably deserves a National Award for his portrayal of Bajirao. He is absolutely perfect and convincing in every single scene. Ranveer is simply exceptional! From his gait to his dialogue delivery, from romantic scenes to emotional sequences, the actor has proved that he is one of the best actors of Bollywood. We are sure when you will come out of the theatre you will be in awe of Ranveer.
Deepika as Mastani looks stunning. The actress has the best dialogues in the film and she has mouthed it excellently. Watch out for her sequences with Tanvi Azmi; she is superb in them. Deepika has once again proved that she can do any role given to her with equal ease.
Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai is nothing less than fabulous. It’s a very small role for an actress of such great calibre, but a great actor doesn’t need a big role to leave a mark. She is the star in all scenes featuring her. And yes, you will crave to watch her on screen. The confidence with which she has carried her role will make you applaud for her. We are sure she is a tough contender for all the best supporting actress awards next year.
Tanvi Azmi is good and Milind Soman leaves a mark.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s music is amazing. All the songs are mind-blowing and suit the situation. However, one thing which I would like to point out is that the tracks Fitoori and Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi are not there in the film. Listen to the jukebox of the film, and you’ll agree that Fitoori is the best number in the album. Now let’s talk about the second track Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi. This song was said to be an emotional number between Ranveer and Priyanka. We wish we could have seen this number on the big screen as we feel that the track could have given more depth to Kashibai’s character.
Bajirao Mastani Movie Review Final Verdict:
Overall, Bajirao Mastani is a masterpiece you would love to watch over and over again.
