Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Neena Gupta, Surekha Sikri and Gajraj Rao
Director: Amit Sharma
Ayushmann Khurrana has a knack of choosing some very unconventional films. Vicky Donor, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Shubh Mangal Savdhan & Andhadhun being a few of them. And most of them paid off really well. Now, Badhaai Ho might just be an addition to that list.
Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao), presumably in his late 40s or 50s, works as a TTE in Indian railways His wife, Priyamvada (Neena Gupta), who also might be in her 40s or 50s, is a housewife and they have two kids – Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana), who must be in his late 20s and Gullar (Shardul Rana) who must be 15. More or less, everything is okay in their parivaar until they come to know that Priyamvada is expecting a child. How the family reacts to the pregnancy and society ke taane is what follows.
The film has an excellent plot and it is superbly executed. There are some wonderfully written characters as well. Add to that hilarious scenes and dialogues and the result is pretty amazing. The scene in which Jeetender gives the ‘good news’ to Nakul & Gullar is so good. The only problem about the film is its weak second half. The makers didn’t really know how to end it and that shows. However, that doesn’t deter the overall charm of the film.
Gajraj Rao & Neena Gupta are just fabulous. They add so much value to the film. Surekha Sikri is superb as Nakul & Gullar’s grandmom. Ayushmann Khurrana is good while Sanya Malhotra is decent as Nakul’s girlfriend.
Watch Badhaai Ho for some terrific storytelling and performances. We give it 3 stars with a kink.
