Post the success of films like Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, filmmakers have started delving deep into this genre. The year 2016 has a lineup of quite a few remarkable sports-oriented films. Let’s take a look.

Saala Khadoos

Released on January 29, this R Madhavan starrer is all about a snobbish, failed boxer-turned-boxing-coach who gets trapped in the politics of the boxing association. He is then posted to Chennai to coach the women’s boxing team. That’s where he meets fisher seller Madhi and sees a potential boxing champion in her.


This biopic on controversial Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin released on May 13. Starring Emraan Hashmi as Azhar, Prachi Desai as Naureen and Nargis Fakhri as Sangeeta Bijlani, the story was inspired from the life of the former national team captain.


This Salman Khan starrer is one of the most-awaited films of this year. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Sultan is the story of a Haryanvi wrestler, his passion, his downfall and his comeback. It also features Anushka Sharma who is a female wrestler and Sultan’s love interest.

Budhia-Born To Run

This is the true story of child prodigy Budhia Singh from Odisha, who is India’s youngest marathon runner. It is an extremely inspiring story of dedication, drive and devotion. Manoj Bajpayee plays Budhia’s mentor in the film that is set to release on August 5.

M.S. Dhoni : The Untold Story

Starring Sushant Singh Rajput as the much-loved captain of the Indian cricket team – Mahindra Singh Dhoni, this biopic is all set to take the fans by storm. The film will release on September 30.


Based on the life of wrestler Mahaveer Singh Phogat, Dangal is yet another interesting sports biopic awaited by the audiences. This Aamir Khan starrer is going to release on December 23.
