Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Jimit Trivedi, Mukesh Hariwala
Director Umesh Shukla’s 102 Not Out takes on a journey and makes you experience varied emotions. It’ll make you laugh, smile and at many instances, even cry.
Amitabh Bachchan plays a 102-year-young lively man Dattarey Vakharia who wants to send 75-year-old son Babu (Rishi Kapoor) to an old age home. Why? Because Dattarey wants to live for (at least) another 16 years and break the record of the oldest person alive. He believes that Babu’s boring and listless nature will be a hindrance to breaking the record.
It’s a very unique story and its execution is exemplary. The first half is rather swift and free-flowing while the second half is an emotional roller-coaster. There are a few things which aren’t easy to grasp but that’s okay. Also, some of the characters are too stereotypical. But these are minor flaws and do not take away much from this good film. The twist in the climax is smartly done. It throws many life lessons without really getting preachy.
Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor take the film to a different level because of their performances. The chemistry between them is simply superb. Watch out for the scene in which Amitabh talks to Rishi about his son who’s settled abroad. Jimit Trivedi does a fabulous job as well.
102 Not Out has the potential to change the way you look at life and people. We give it 3.5 stars with a big kink.
